That's an oil (to water) cooler off an MG Metro also used on some autos I think.

If you want to use screw on filters it'd be simpler to pick up a 2nd hand filter head.

The filter head in that picture was fitted to the MG engines which had a water to oil cooler. The oil cooler is the device between the filter head and the oil filter.

Where can What be bought? bolts and studs can be bought from the usual suspects, I doubt that you can still buy that type of filter head new, and the same could be said for the oil cooler, however i have seen oil coolers very similar on ebay from other cars, but whether they would fit, i dont know.

which bit is it you are looking to buy?

The holes on the block are in different locations between the bolt on and screw on filters heads, so it isnt just a simple swap.

Saw that and thought, ooh la la, you can change to screw on..

I took the oil filter 'head' off my 850 and it was a straight fit (the screw on type head came in a box with my 1275 but it cant fit due to bolt holes)

Then I chucked the bolt in the bin along with the filter!!

Also just seen that with the holder filter you keep the metal bit and replace the element, I kinda stabbed it with a screwdriver as I didnt see the bolt underneah haha

So long story short, just wondered if you could convert from bolt on filters to screw on filters? And if you can buy the bolts..

Thankenyou!

Both me & David Vizard think the heads are interchangeable. You would need to swap the oil feed pipe too - is that why it didn't line up?

Older engines had 'purolater element type' filters where only the element is changed and is held on with a metal cylindrical cup and bolted straight up and into the oil filter head..

Later engines had oil filters which simply screwed on to the oil filter head..

The differences between oil filter head a and b are that the bolt holes on both the head and the block are not the same, meaning it is not a simple bolt on swap.

I was wondering if any spacer like product was available, which allowed screw on type filter heads to fit onto the earlier blocks..

The picture which I have shown has the earlier type 'purolater element type' head along with a screw on filter..

Hope this makes more sense!

From my quick look at the oil filter heads, that of the earlier type all holes are all parallell, however on the later the oil hole is either lower or higher..

Which would limit oil from getting to the filter, if not blocking it completely...

The hole in the block has a huge countersink on it.

look at the gasket if you have one or https://www.moss-eur...RESTORATION.pdf

If you're talking about Mini parts... the element type and screw on type filter heads use the same center distance and same diameter studs. The screw on head does use shorter bolts or studs into the block... but everything will still line up if you have the right mounting fasteners. As mentioned above, the oil pipe from the filter head to the block is bent in a slightly different shape for the two heads. I've seen two fixes employed for this: 1) re-bend the old pipe to fit on the new type filter head, or 2) cut the oil feed pipe to remove a section from the middle, then span the gap with rubber hose held on by clamps.

It's quite possible that your filter head that won't fit is off of some non-Mini (non-BMC) application. The U.S. sources for spin-on filter heads only sell highly overpriced "reconditioned" units. I suggest you take the advice above and go to a yard and buy a used one... or find a shop that works on A-series cars/engines and buy a used filter head off of them. Should you decide to retain the old style element filter head, look for donor parts from other BMC cars like the Minor, MGB, or Midget/Sprite. by the way, the Sprite/Midget filter head was different than that used on the Mini. Though a similar A-Series engine, the Sprite/Midget filter heads used several different mounting "feet" to the block... various thicknesses and angles.

Agree with miniboo the two different types of filter head are interchangable as I have done it myself on a friends engine
