Annoying Crunch!

The gearbox was built with all new bearings and baulk rings. We inspected the syncros and they looked fine so we didnt replace them. The gearbox had also only done about 20,000 miles so they werent high mileage bits anyway. Went driving in it yesterday, and it really crunches going into 2nd Sad I think it mainly when gearing down, but does it occasionally when going up. If the engine is just ticking over and i put it into 2nd then everything is fine and it makes no crunching at all. What do people think?

I think the clutch may be dragging a bit, have you bled it propperly ?Just been driving my mini about, after completing its rebuild. Both the engine and gearbox were built at the same time.

Happens if worn and play between clutch (even new) and crank gear splines.

Clutch drag is sometimes caused by the plate centre splines sticking in the crank and not sliding propper.
Happens if worn and play between clutch (even new) and crank gear splines.
ok, there was definately not any play, but could well be the splines sticking. Will this loosen over time?

Maybe not....might be lucky.Clutch drag is sometimes caused by the plate centre splines sticking in the crank and not sliding propper.

Best if you can to strip and copperslip the splines rubbing any excess off fitting just the clutch plate and working the plate back and to before taking off and reassembling. If not you will have to live with it I'm afraid.

Sticky clutches are normally most noticeable in reverse as there's no synchro.
Another test... find a gentle slope the car will just roll down, reverse a little then hold the clutch down: if it's more reluctant to roll forwards suspect the clutch.

Unfortunately it really does sound like either the baulk ring or gear friction surfaces have worn to the extent that friction is not taking over before the dogteeth try and engage...
You're only real option is to pull the box.

If you are trying to squeeze into second at thirty for instance, there is a lot of strain on the syncros, you can hear the box squeeling sometimes so its best to double declutch....It's an old design remember
