Just a silly thought i had on the way into work this morning.

I know if you SORN your car or bike you have to have it off the road, but what if its kept on a trailer that so happens to be on the road atached to a car that is not SORN and road leagl?

:D <- that's me thinking that is!!!!

It's not on the road... but it's very easy to steal!!!! and would probably annoy your neighbors

I only ask, as i see a car (on the way to and from work) on a trailer on the road, hooked up, and its been there for months. The question just popped into me noggin this morning, which is strange in its self as i try not thinking in the mornings!

I don't think so, no, as 2 of the wheels will still technically be on the road.

Don't think you are allowed any wheels on the road if it is sorn so it would have to be on a trailer

We had a thread about going to 'n from an MoT that might help.

A car on a Trailer is just freight. I imagine the trailer would need to show that it belongs to a road legal vehicle though.

Incorrect.

An A-frame uses a rigid coupling which connects to the bottom arms of the front suspension. All 4 wheels are on the road. Techinically, any rigid coupling is classed as a trailer, so no tax is required.

The short answer to both is no. A vehicle that is registered SORN is registered to be kept at an address, if it is on the road it is not at an address whether it is on a trailer or not. Similarly it cannot be moved anywhere at all either on or off the road except to an MOT station for a pre-booked test and then for subsequent MOT repair and then immediately back to its place of storage. Otherwise the car must remain at its registered address. The address on a SORN cannot be changed without taxing the car in between storage addresses and the minimum period you can buy tax for is a month (which is done by getting a refund for the majority of a 6 month or 1 year tax disc). This is done specifically to prevent you taking your car anywhere while under a SORN.

Argh... We went all through this a few days ago! I didn't quite follow all of it, but to my understanding, for it to 'become part of the trailor' it has to be under a certain weight limit, for which the Minis gross weight doesn't, so it still not legal.

You can take it anywhere you like ON a trailer, as it's not being used on the road but if it's kept there (i think being at a garage for restoration doesn't count) then technically the address should be changed on the V5c. Personally i don't know anybody that does this without selling the vehicle though. If i move house does this mean i would have to leave my long term SORNed project at the old address?? i don't think so.
