Hi can anyone help me I will start at the begining.
6 months ago while driving up a large hill at 60mph with foot to floor the car started miss firing / hesitating, this was on a 998 standard engine. Stopped down the road and could notfind any fault wile idle or when reving all seemed ok, now drive off and feels a bit hesitant, go up a hil and it is realy noticable.
Thought what the heck I need a bigger engine anyway, so had a 1275 MG engine and gearbox fitted, only thing left over from the 998 engine was the alternator everything else was changed including carb, leads, plugs, coil, dissy etc ( all came withe the MG engine ). I thought this would fix te problem but no it is still there I then flushed the fuel lines and swapped the fuel pump just in case. Still did not fix the problem.
Next I thought it must be electrical so, as the alternator was the only thing left I unplugged the terminal block from the back of it, Hey presto problem has gone. Replaced the alternator and thought that would be it but no still hesitant under load, unplugged the alternator and problem fixed.
Can any one help, I was thinking of swapping the coil out next as it was not new when the engine was fitte, but what are the chances of the first coil and the seccond coil being faulty.
Over six months and £800 later and still not fixed

i think coils just pack in altogether
you sure its the correct coil? theres 12v std and 9v ballast....
is it wiring problems as im guessing youve not changed the wiring loom with the engine swap....?
have you checked battery too?
take car to a garage that does a battery/alternator test its usally free and will tell you if they are a problem!

yep it is the ballast type 9V (car is 1989 and the engine is newer) and the coil that is on now came with the new engine, had the battery checked and also tried another battery to make sure, the alternator was faulty as it was bouncing around 10.5V to 14V, have fitted a brand new one which is giving out a steady 14.something volts. did this today but still have the same problem.
You mention the wiring loom, yes tis has not been changed, the fues box looks a bit mucky (dirty terminals) may give this a going over in the morning unless you have any more ideas?

id check the alternator 'plug' wiring, trace the wires back to see if theres something loose, bent, frayed, etc....
unless ive read ur post wrong when you take this plug out it works....you do mean the 3(i think) prong, cube plug in the alternator....
the coil........does it have a pink and white wire going too it? as its using an older wiring loom(not sure when they changed to ballast) than the engine may need the 12v coil for the wiring...

yep it does have the pink and white wire, and yep it is the 3 pin cube plug from the back of the alternator that when removed all is fine
