Hi, Im kinda new with all the mini DIY stuff. I have experienced a problem with my mini engine and had to take it out to fix it and sort it out. I just had a thought that while it is out it would probably be worth giving her a lick of paint. What kind of paint is suitable to pain the engine with? It would have to stand hot temperatures I guess. would hamerite be ok to use?

thanks for your help

(its a mini adventure) ;)

You need to use engine enamel really. Not only does it need to be temperature stable but also resistant to oils, fuel, acidic vapour, coolant and all the other things engines are exposed to.

The guide i wrote might help you. Theres a link to it in my sig.

I've heard of people using hammerite on engines before and they said they had no problems. Personaly i'd hate to use hammerite - i mean its great stuff for the job it was designed to do - but i just think its a right pig to work with. I think you'll be giving yourself a hard time by using it on an engine with small brushes, but saying that - maybe with the engine out you won't need to use as small brushes as you do with the engine in place.

Engine enamel is made for this purpose and as dan said is resistant to things it will be exposed to. Its also really easy to work with and goes on nice and smooth.

Painted me mini thirty engine in hammerite and looks great, but you do need to paint it with the engine out the car and some parts removed.

when i fit my engine, i was impatient having degreased it thoroughly, i then primed it and left it at that

only place it has come off is where i have bashed it abot with a spanner (levering the alternator into place with a LOT of force)

not that i reccomend leaving it primed or anything, just that it has lasted over a year without an trouble

I always spray mine in 2k paint, you can get a bit of yellowing in the laquer after a few years but i've never had any troubles with paint peeling.

I never bother painting any of my own engines.. lol..

Here's is one i built and painted for someone and painted Bini blue, the same colour as the car.
