Your engine was made by pouring hot runny iron in to sand moulds, so the solid, sandy, bits were where the gaps are now, 'n the solid iron bits were once fresh air. The core plugs fill the holes where the bits of sand were held together by "cores". If they dip your engine to clean it (probably not since you've already painted it?) they'll remove and replace the plugs. Even if it doesn't get dipped it'd be worthwhile cleaning out the oil galleries

Im hoping to have the engine back sometime this week (may be wishful thinking)! Then its just a case of sticking it back in!

The engine went away last wednesday, hopefully should be back sometime this week!
