Hi,

can anyone tell me where to find the coolant drain plugs on the 998 engine (if there's any at all) I've removed the rad but the haynes manual talks about drain plugs, yet the description of where to find them is pretty poor, and the diagram they've included makes no sense at all.

i'd like to get the job done properly and give the system a good flush out

If you have an A+ then there aren't any. A series engines had one on the back under the exhaust manifold.

cheers, its just an A, so dya think i will be able to get to it without removing the manifold?

Well my A series does so maybe there is a certain age.

The drain is a bolt just below the level of the head on the back left when looking from the front of the car.

i've had a look just now, and i can see three 13mm bolts on the back of the cylinder block are these the drain plugs, if they are then theres 2 more than i was expecting to find there

each bolt is located in the middle of its own rectangular section across width of the block

An just to confuse I have an A series that doesnt have the drain plug and an A+ that does and an A+ that doesn't

you dont have a pic of an A series that does do you? then i can tell for sure if i have one or not

I am pretty sure that the coolant drain plug is something like a 7/8" or 15/16" or something. I'm also pretty sure it's on the O/S of the engine, at the back of the block. Unless you've got one at the front of your radiator? They're a bit handier!

Oh, and on my engines, two of my A series have them and so does one of my A+ ones!

The plug is on the drivers/clutch end of the engine on the back face of the block just below the level of the engine steady....if its there!

no thats the oil pressure relief valve cover nut which is on the front of the block

around the same place but on the back/exhaust side of the block

thge 2 plates you are talking about are the tappet chest covers. dont undo these otherwise you will have to replace the seals. the plug is located right under the clutch slave cylinder on the block.

Not normally, the tappet chest has re-usable rubber gaskets that usually last quite well unless they're really old or over tightened.

Even if you find the coolant drain, don't bother to open it as it won't work. This drain is at the end of a tube in the block casting which sits stagnant because it's outside the coolant flow. That means it fills up with silt and rust and so they usually don't actually work once the plug is removed. Just drain it through the rad and flush it.

by the way, don't use 13mm spanners on 1/2" bolt heads! You won't be finding 13mm nuts or bolts on an A series engine.

but i've just finished rounding most of mine off on purpose, gonna go down to halfords and get some of those new circular spanners

i've had a good look round and can conclude i dont have a drain plug but by the sound of Dans post they are pretty useless anyway, so no big deal, although i still need a rad pretty urgently as the car is ready to have it fitted, the one i had lined up is a pile of junk...why did i only notice when i came to fit it!!
