press the nozzle with the very tip of you finger rather than with the middle of the last joint (if you know what i mean). it feels less comfortable but it stops paint building up on the overhanging bit of your finger then flying off in a big blob onto your nice new paint job.
shake it for much longer than you think. a quick wiggle isnt enough (oo-er), follow the recommendations on the can.
And finally use a mask, other wise see the thread entitled "black snot"...

i found that you need to buy good quality paint halfords is good for colour matching
it can help if the panel is warm before you do the spraying. and get light shining on the panel.
when using the cans spray the panel side to side, then up and down the panel this helps even coverage and avoids runs.
when doing the top coat move slower so the paint goes on thicker you will se it go shiny instead of dull.

Buy MORE spray cans than you think you are going to use...
DONT use all the paint in the can. As the can runs out, it will start to spit and you will get blobs of paint everywhere and it will need sanding again...
Build the paint up, you will need atleast 5 dry coats of paint. (At least)
Also, Make sure the area is perfectly smooth before you start.
Oh, and you WILL need primer

I sprayed my whole moped, and I only gave the back end like a couple of coats and when I T cut it a few weeks later, all the primer started to show through

this is what my scooter turned out like...
