The fuel pump does draw a fair whack of current. The relays are used in the injected cars mainly to make the pump controllable by the ECU and alarm/imobiliser but it is a good idea to isolate it from the switch. I got a new Moss catalogue today and noticed that they have started selling an easy fit pre-wired innertia switch, you could use that or just get any innertia switch to fit. The switch should isolate the pump completely and not leave it connected to the relay.

Do you mean this one?:

That's the one. As I said though you can use one from anywhere, this is just convenient because the end is already terminated. Fit it between the relay and the pump.

Righto - we have the inertia switch (I told Teapot I wasn't prepared to send a loom without one  ) which will be wired on 20amp cable from an ignition only live to an inline fuse, then the switch (which I have tested) and on to the pump.

I'm working on all the earthing now, and tempted as I am to provide full earthing for everything via a few known earth points, I also know that many of the lights earth through their connection to the body. To save on redundant wire (and hence weight etc) I would just like to confirm that the following earth through the fitting:

Headlights, dipped and full beam
Sidelights
Indicators (except repeaters)
Brake lights (except central high level one which is going in)

Also, Huey has 4 spotlights... I think it would be better to earth these through an earthing point, but any comments on these?

Thanks guys - this is coming on nicely now and will be done this weekend!!!

Actually most of the parts on later Mini looms earth through three specific earth points rather than directly. Headlights, side lights and some front indicators (depending on the exact model and how they've been fitted) are earthed through the main front body loom earth point on the bulkhead crossmember. The rear clusters are all earthed though the rear earth point beneath the left hand cluster. How exactly you choose to do it it is up to you but there is no reason not to use master earth points. Exactly how this would relate to the pickup rear clusters I'm not sure, you'll have to look at them yourself. I don't have access to any to check.

Thanks Dan - to me it makes sense to have just a few earth points - this will mean just selected points to check and clean for poor earthing issues in the future... far easier than going round the car looking for bad earths all over... I'll build accordingly

Dinner was delish!!

Right - I need to work out where this inertia switch will mount. Clearly, it needs to be upright, and I could allow wiring to reach:

Nearside inner wing by radiator
Cross member, ie above the position of the mech puel pump
The strut with a hole in at right angles to the front/rear line of the car (where there is a hole)

However, these strike me as a little bit awkward for mounting. The actual bulkhead, just to the left of the wiper motor, is almost vertical... do you think this would work ok?

EDIT: I have marked 3 possibles A B and C - comments please?
