Right has anybody got this months miniworld and last months mini mag? Just a bit confused if you have read this months miniworld inbox section you will notice that one bloke has gotten bored and run the original italian job plates through the dvla system where one of the plates was attached to an mx5, where as if you read last months minimag there is a section in there where another bloke had bought these plates at an auction a whole job lot so unless he owns an mx5 i dont know who is in the wrong? can you see my point?

Confused

I have Mini World this month but have not read that yet.
My first thoughts are that they are not on the MX-5. I don't know when the MX-5 first came into production, but the standard plates for that year would be a lot later than when The Italian Job was made. Therefore, the plate on the MX-5 would be a private plate (obviously!). The next logical conclusion to make is that the owner of the MX-5 would have to search for the plates on one of the original Minis. After doing that, why would anyone put it on an MX-5? I very much doubt it is a coincidence that the guy just happened to pick a random private plate that was also that for one of the Minis is TIJ.

yes but it does seem rather strange that when he did do the search that only one of the plates came up where as this bloke from which had an article in minimag wrote about him had bought all three plates (i am assuming that they came with v5's?) is it me or does this now seem a bit strange?

Maybe the plates he bought as a job lot were the original plates. That wouldn't stop someone else from being able to use them would it? Once the plate in question is not registered to any vehicle, the guy with the MX-5 could easily have got new ones made up? Although the guy will have the plate that says HMP739G he might not actually have the right to put it on a car yet. Seems silly though.
And of all cars to put it on, why an MX-5? At least he didn't put it on a Bini.

I read that too!!! And it confused the hell out of me as well!!
I thought the guy who bought the original plates was making replica minis for the plates to go on to?!
