my engine bays always have the "rat" look. i'm getting the engine replaced in the wifes car and mine is being stripped and rebuilt soon.
What is the best way to paint it up real nice? do i need to strip and clean and pain each bit individually? or can i slop some high temp gunk straight on her as she is?
Tell me all about it!!

Painting it assembled makes a lot of sense, no overpainting of mating surfaces, and it acts like an added seal over gasket joints.
Degreasing is the biggest challenge.

can i plug all the bits that don't like water and steam clean it? and use gunk or chemical cleaner? then i 'spose a few of the smaller bits eg leads and distributor cap can be moved out of the way to allow for the colour coat. or is steam cleaning not advisable?

she actually said i could paint it in the hallway... but i couldn't get through the door on my own (let alone the engine) so i did it outside... pain dried before the rain came along. didn't get anything else done yesterday as i was working miles away but just found out that MRS BIGGAV is on the Malvern stand (her car i mean) so i'll be beavering away for the next 2 weeks!!
