depends on the gun size/type and the material being sprayed. Have you got any clue what the gun is you have

It should say on the gun how much, also i will say how much PSI the paint can be depending on the type of gun,

the guns at work have a screw on the bottom, it increases and reduces the pressure according to which way its turned. When spraying you can just feel when its right, i feel its better to have the pressure just a little low than spraying too much, can always to more layers, much more work to take the paint off after its ran (and thats just from what iv got from spraying starter motors and turbochargers)

my gun came with pretty specific guidelines on pressures, and there are web-sites with plenty of info for most makes.

Mine runs at 3.5 bar and seems to be sound as a pound.

its a Sata gun.

Lucky you! I use devilbiss, can't afford a Sata :P about 30 psi for base and about 35 for lacquer. It's pretty much the same for most guns.

I'd say the sata is about as good and not much better than a Gti. Digital guage on handle packed up in first week and Sata dont seem too fussed in sorting it out.

Ha yeah the gauges always go, never used one with it working! It's a much better made gun than the Gti, but the increase in quality doesn't match the increase in price! I use a Gti pro, which is nicely made, and works lovely, especially with the new compliant lacquers. I'd still prefer a Sata, but unless I find one for Gti money, I'll be sticking with Devilbiss.

Garage I worked at had a guy from ICI come round to demo 2 pak - way back in the day. The owner thought it was a good blag to get his Jenson Healey resprayed. The Demo guy sprayed to whole car in 2 wet coats in a matter of minutes using over 60psi 'n it was the best gloss I've ever seen!

Only problem was it sucked up every bit of C**p in service bay and dumped it in the paint before it dried :P

i use a gti and sri (gravity- top loader) guns both of these i find great also used the sata's but yeah couldnt bring my self to buy one (not rich enough) i use about 30psi for the gravity fed gun and my older suction guns i run at about 60psi but depends on what setup im running and what material i drop for base usully but need the higher for the solid/clear.

thanks guys, i'll have to inspect the gun to see if there's any settings written on it. i dont have the manuals, its old but seem to be good quality. i'm using it to spray sealant on a concrete kitchen counter top i made. the first coat was really thick - but then again it was at 90psi!
its the first time i spray anything so its practice for when i paint my clubby, but i think i'll buy a new gun for that...

cheers

I find the Devilbiss Gti only good for basecoats to be honest!

We run Sata's all round at work for solid, laquer and even primer!

Does that make us rich?

Muhaha :shifty:

Well the apprentice at work managed to wreck an "IDEA" spraygun, so god knows what he would do to a Sata!
