if its stolen, then your best bet should be straight to the police!!

presuming you'd already reported it though, they should have a file on it already?

Haven't a clue about the rules of this sort of thing, sorry - so I wouldn't be able to say how it affects things. No harm in trying though, I wouldn't have thought!

I guess the only hard thing would be proving ownership of the car... and also, how the other person managed to keep it on the road, without an official V5, or proof of change of ownership.

The only other way.. I think the DVLA release a certain amount of information of its whereabouts, for a fee. I'm not sure what you're entitled to know and what they're not allowed to disclose.

But the police is the best bet!! Take the V5 in and explain the situation!

Oh, and I found out on the DVLA site - They've got a facility where you can check a certain amount of details that correspond to a numberplate, as long as you know the model of car, too.

I'd think it's quite likely it has been sold on, It would have to be a particularly stupid toerag to drive around in a car they stole on its original plates. Was it SORN'ed when you had it, I would think the DVLA would contact you if someone tried to change the ownership of your car without the V5. I'd certainly contact the Police 'n it has to be said you've been a bit of a fool for not reporting it stolen in the first place - they could have been driving around clocking up all sorts of offences in your name.

Date of liability can mean when the SORN runs out, not just whether it's taxed or not... Mine used to say when the sorn ran out, but didn't say it was sorn.

U say this was a year ago? What was he doing to the car and did u contact him during these times? as it can become his possesion if u owed him some money and its been over a certain period! i think anyway!!

Good luck in finding it!

So it was last taxed or sorned in July last year. You'll have to deal with it if it's registered in your name as you'll become liable for road tax this July.

i just phoned the dvla and my dads mate

1.the car is registered in my dads name still and is sorned until july,so i dont know where it came from that it was on the road still.
2.my dads mate says he recouped their loss of rent by selling all the blokes tools and they only know him by steve no surname!(bit weird) "S motors" is what he went by if anyone knows about him or seen his buisness let me know please.
3.the car at the time of going to him was stripped with the engine left in and no front end.

i realise now my dad is liable so im going to report it stolen 2mo when he gets back from italy .

so annoyed about this it was my first car and my first mini.
