Hello, just bought a 1980 Mini 1000, can anybody point me towards a site that has Vin plate details, so that I can decode my Vin plate. Finn.

You seem to be under the impression that someone at Leyland was writing down information about the cars they were producing. Unfortunately in Birmingham during the Leyland / Austin Rover era there was a distinct lack of interest in record keeping. SAX means Rover, X means Mini. The next bit means Saloon, 2 door, manual or automatic. Beyond that I don't think there's much information available.

OI!! I strongly resent that remark! I made my living as a journalist up until the Redundancy Demon came knocking!

For your information, the correct term would be 'Brummy', plural being 'Brummies'. If you're going to pick on us for apparent illiteracy, then at least make sure you're using standard English and employing correct grammar and punctuation in the process, mister.

*Pies Bungle*

Anyway... *Gets off soap-box and shoves topic back on track* *Ahem*

I was actually under the impression that I was asking a perfectly reasonable question on my first ever visit to your forum, I seem to have recieved a *yellow human water* take and a Brummie spelling lesson as a reply.
No need to reply to this one as it was my first visit, so shall it be my last.

Finn,

With respect, I shouldn't have really derailed your topic like I did. However, I think you're being a little premature in skulking off. A joke is simply that, a joke. It wasn't at your expense. How about you stay a little while longer and see if someone else has the information you need?

I have had a look around for you and there are a number of general VIN decoders online, however, I'm not sure they'll cover Classic Minis.

Best Regards,

G.D

If you want to take it as a *yellow human water* take then fair enough, but Dans answer doesn't get much more concise! Thats all the information there is about VIN codes.

1959 - 1980 look here http://www.minimania...on/ArticleV.cfm

1980 - 2000 look here http://www.minimania...82/ArticleV.cfm

anything other than that is either on the engine number or deemed not important enough to record....
