put the gerabox into reverse, and it moves the pin into the right possition, then use a small punch to drive it out

On the gear linkage there is a thicker diameter block piece near the gearbox there is a roll pin pushed through, you need to push the pin out to disconnect the gear linkage rods.
hope it helps

Edit: plus what benpopham said, although it might be hard to find reverse if its already out the car.

hi, sorry to bring this back up but i'm struggling with this as well (my engine is still in-car). On the thicker part it appears to have 2 'roll pins' but no matter what I do I can't get them out. Do they come out either direction? Is it just brute force I need to employ?

I can get the car in reverse but doesn't seem to make much difference.

Please help!?

Arrgghh!! they are a pain i dreaded putting the new one back in. wich in turn had to be taken out a few times aftrwoods :genius:
I found squirting penatrative grease helps a bit, and maybe close to a whol can of WD-40 cant hurt! :P
Its is just a case of finding a punch the right size, not to small not to big so it wont fit through the hole.
Next thing is the angle. i personally find it easier if the car is in third, or in nuetral with the stick as far over to Off-side as possible.
Its basically a cas of dislodging the rust and Road dirt from inside.

I hope this hlps!!

Thanks Alastair, but ho-hum no luck today though *sigh*, haven't got any punches so was trying with various other things, best fit was a drill-bit and hammer but couldn't get a decent strike on it. Will go and invest in some punches and try again later. Everything else is off and I'm ready to haul out the engine just need to get these damn pins out!

Do I need both of them out or can i just make do with the one nearest the gear box?

Thanks for the tips!

Dan

nO JUST ONE, probably the closest to the engine is the best (well either one i always did the one closest to the engine)
Yer, i tried to do that with different things such as nails. but i finally had get a punch that would fit it. i
think there is a punch like tool for vauxhaul brake calipers that fits exactly...but i drift!

Good luck please reply with your news!!

I did it the following way:
1.First off all I sprayed it with a rust spray and let it work over night.
2.3rd gear
3.than use a punch tool ( not too long because the shorter the better it works) than put it on the small opening where the pin roll is in and give it a short hit with a hammer.

I know it is a short, tough job. :closed:

i gave up after over a week of trying on this. I ended up grinding the gear linkage as i knew i could source another fairly simply.

I believe 3rd gear to make it easier than reverse and in terms of punches, those "watchmaker" screwdrivers with the sivler handles and carbon steel heads do the trick but i was still to weak in the end.

let us know how u get on

Urrm, a punch would be better than the Screwdriver, due to equal force around the pin.

The 'ideal' place for the gear lever is in the reverse gate but not selecting the gear ( so lift and move to the right, but not down into gear )

When you use the correct punch it's easy, and only the ones which have been butchered about because the incorrect tool has been use are difficult to remove with the eventual option being to cut the thing off...
