My new BMH Shell arrived on Tuesday so have spent the last 2 days sealing and still have more to do. Anyway my question involves bolt and nut sizes. I have all the standard sub frame fitting kits so no bolts needed there but for things like steering column and other bits and bobs what sizes will I need if anyone knows and is eBay the best place to get bags of various sizes and lengths. Also any recommendations and extra prep work before painting. Will be fully stone chipping etc underside.

Thanks

Hi.. you will need a range of UNF hex bolts 1/4unf - 3/4unf dia and 1/2" - 5" long, and you will need nuts, washers, lock washers, spring washers, and nyloc nuts, you can purchase sets from Minispares ect ect..................

The oddest thing on the BMH shells is the threads for the door latch screws, they are a BSF size rather than UNF. I had to buy a specific tap to clear them.

Good advice with a new shell: take off all the bolt on parts because they aren't primed underneath. The boot and door hinges (both sides) and the shock mountings. Take them off, prime and paint. Be careful unscrewing them, there was a lump of *woman of ill repute* on the end of a screw on one of my shock mounts that totally destroyed the thread when I removed the screw. I had to re-cut all the shock mount threads one size up in the end.

I get all my nuts / bolts / washers from a company called south east essex fasteners on an industrial estate round the corner. Anything you want, stainless zink coated... etc in any size.

eg I bought 100 x 1/2inch af headed bolts 1 inch long / 100 nuts / 100 washers in zinc and payed £4.

I got a load of fasteners from this place, they do mixed bags or you can order stuff separately

Should I go stainless or zinc plated. Are the zinc not stronger.

Thanks

Stainless can cause what it's screwed into to rot faster too (and alter the torque values), so best to use it only in low load application where male & female threads can be stainless.

i'd use zinc plated rather than stainless, due to tensile strength. stainless is ok for parts that are not under any great load

I've always been told not to go for stainless fasteners due to the corrosion issues on the surrounding metals, unless they are stainless as well of course!
