Calm down people.

Heres the FAQ thread on insurance: http://www.theminifo...?showtopic=9672

Unfoutunatly its a topic that gets brought up too often and most questions about it have been answered many times in the past.

You say its your first car - So i assume your young 17/18? I also see it says in your blurb you have a 1275 engine? So just from that i'd adivse you to go straight to specialist or classic insurance.

I'm 17, just passed my test, I'm with Footman James on a classic car policy. The car must be over 15 years old to qualify as a classic but the beniits are great - My insurance is £680 TPFT for a stage 1 998 engine city, with loads of mods - Not bad considering the cheapest 'normal' insurance quote i got was £1200 for a bog standard mini! If your having trouble getting a cheap enough quote try limiting your mileage, adding mum/dad to the policy or raising the excess.

Be careful though, my friend had an insurance invalidated because the car was registered in his name, yet the insurance policy was in his mothers, with him as a named driver for social uses. after crashing 10 miles away from home on a weekday he might have a court case for driving with invalid insurance or something or other.

The term the insurance companies use is "fronting" - using another more experienced driver as a "front" for obtaining cheaper insurance on a car that you yourself will be the main driver of.

Yeah if you claim your mum/dad is the main driver on the policy and the insursnce finds otherwise your insurance can be invalid. However simply adding them as a named driver is fine - Brings down the quote by about 5% on average and TMF+ discount is 15% with certain companies - Also the Pass plus scheme knocks off about 20% in your first year!

There is no need to sign up to any club for a discount on insurance, all they ask is are you a member of a club and if so which one, I jusr named a few when I got my insurance, some times they ask if you buy the mags etc, but all there after is trying to get a feeling if you are a true enthusiast or not.

Also bare in mind when most insurance companies say there give you a discount for xyz they have nornmally already loaded the premium in the first place.

As a first car you won't get classic cover on it, so go with the big boys, ring all the free phone numbers in the yellow pages etc

And, if you've paid a lot for your car, make sure you get it on an agreed value policy or the cover won't be worth the paper it's written on if you need to make a claim!!!

Check what you actually get for your money. Just because something is cheaper, doesn't mean it is the best cover!

I've got classic cover on my first car and i know i've seen loads of people saying they have classic cover when they are 17/18.
