You know the cranks are different as they have a bolt on flywheel?

yeah, have plenty of cranks... an abundance of auto engines with knackered boxes which will provide very useful donor cranks...

Anything fits with a big enough shoehorn and an industrial size tub of KY.

It's an Austin Maestro 1275cc engine and gearbox, they are an A+1275 but they use a VW golf gearbox thats bolted to the side. the cranks are like a normal conventional crank that the flywheel bolt onto.

yup. It'll be the second one I've done.... ok the first one came ready split and the crank changed over.... but it's a sinch... and the oil filter is in a much friendlier position... at the top MPI esq'

and worth it as the block has only got 35k on it

I´ve done such a conversion some ten years ago - very nice engine.

I changed the inlet and carb to MG Metro spec as I wasn't too confident in the carburetor electronics.

What I wonder today however, is if it was a wise idea to ditch the gearbox.

With a modified subframe, would you consider it possible to fit the engine as it is (with its Golf box)?

Edit: Sorry, just found the other posts about the engine being rotated 180 degree.

So there was a reason for getting rid of the Volkswagen stuf.....

Also as the VW gearbox is only a 4 speed, the Honda box which is mated to a few is a 5 speed which may have made the swap a possibility, but to be honest, would be probably quicker, cheaper and in the end more rewarding to drop a 1.4 K series engine in..
