Hey all
Got some nooby questions i'm afraid!
My car is running very hot shortly afterstart up. Its a 998 mayfair with choke, and it gets warm, then the temp gauge ges all the way up to boiling, then sits there for 2-3 min at the most, then falls back down to normal. It's also getting through a lot of water in the radiator.
I normally get it looked after by Bill Richards of Ashford, but at the moment the car is with me at university, he believes it to be the thermostat sticking, and so says i should replace it, apparently this is a very easy job.
Does anyone know how easy it is, and if this diagnosis sounds right? Bill has never let me down in the past so i trust it 100%, i just dont trust myself working on my car!
Any tips on how to replace the thermostat would be very welcome, a walkthrough with pictures a dream come true!
Thanks again
Simon

no pictures required its a doddle

right side of engine, top hose that goes into the radiator at the front...undo that hose.

where it connected to the engine is the thermostat housing..its held in place by 3 bolts, also attached to it is the radiator bracket, so you will need to unscrew the 2 bolts on the radiator as well.

gently tap the housing, not hard you'll break it. it should come loose, don't try to pry it off, you'll damage the mating faces..

inside there will be the thermostat.

it can be tested by dropping it into boiling water, if you see it open its fine. if it doesn't go buy a new one plus a gasket.

Coat the thermostat studs with WD40/pentrant for a good while before attempting to undo them. Quite common for them to seize.
