For those that want to try their hand at their own photo editing, but don't want to pay the ridiculous prices for a copy of Photoshop, I've compiled a list of free, downloadable alternatives!

Put GIMP under linux too..

GIMP without a shadow of a doubt, however it does take a little work to get used to, just as Photoshop does. If you want something a little more user friendly (though not nearly as powerful) Paint.net is worth a try.

thanks! I got the gimp one, its abit like photoshop but slighly more confusing lol doent seem to have abit to show you your diffo layers... and getting the start off layer the right size its confusing...probs just me! Ill have to get use to it ^__- been looking for one for ages thanks for your help

No, not just you. It does have a slightly different approach to things and if you are used to the Adobe interface it can be quite confusing. LOL

for a free(and legal) product, GIMP is the best I would say. I havnt used the others thou, and I havnt used gimp in like 5 years:-) photoshop all the way;)

noticed today whsmith is sellin paint shop pro for 59.99 - not bad value for a decent product.

If you're looking for something more web-orientated, then Adobe Fireworks is worth a try; although this is little cheaper than photoshop, if any!

If you are happy with a slightly older version (which to be honest will do everything most of us need) you can get Version X for £21.99 on Amazon or version IX for 19.99. Posted Image

there is also serif drawplus i think version 7 is free as far as i no its only for windows
