I have painted my scuttle with Tahiti blue perlescent (two pack?) paint and have put a few coats of clear lacquer over it, it now needs cutting back (quite a lot I think) to get the glossy shine and allow it match the rest of the paint (looks quite dull at the moment).

What type(s) of cutting compound should I use?

Where can I get it from - Halfords only seem to sell T-Cut type stuff.

Any advice appreciated.

Farecla is good all round.

Alot of bodyshops use it, its not the cheapest, or the dearest but is pretty good.

I think G3 would be your best bet. Do you have an electric polishing machine or will it be a elbow grease affair?

yeah use Farecla g3 for first cut then use a g10 or 3m hand glaze to get the shine real deep and this also gets rid of swirl marks after the first compound cut but goin be hard work by hand most use a buffer to polish paint up .

According to Panelbeaterpeter and a few other posts I've read it's not wise to use G3 by hand as it WILL scratch the finish. You will need to use a proper polisher with G3 as it needs to have an even amount of pressure.

yes this is true if the paint is still very fresh but the hand glaze or g10 will get rid of any small marks left by the g3 but would be best using a buffer

I cut back and polished every bit of bodywork on our mini van by hand after we sprayed him!!!

A scuttle will be easy to do by hand, like others have said, Farecla G3, then a finer grade, and finish with a clay bar or good polish... But yes, it will be easier with a mop. Just make sure you don't go through on the edges!

I do have a halfords orbital polisher but not sure if I would need a special attachement (mop?). Was planning to just use elbow grease.

The finish at the moment (with clearcoat lacquer) doesnt look good, not sure if we sprayed it wrong, it looks kind of frosty...

A mop is like a 7" angle grinder but it spins a lot slower, you buy the foam end that screws on.

If it's looking frosty then it may need to be done again, how warm was it when you painted it? as basecoat paint doesn't like the cold and will go a kind of frosted colour, then when it's laquered it will look the same but shiney.

when i painted the transformers sign on my roof i flatted and polished it by hand, i used 1200, then G3 then 3m finesse. it came out lovely.

Base coat went on really well it was about 12 degrees outside, but we did it in a garage.

The lacquer went all frosty the moment we put it on.

I guess worst case I have to wet n dry the lacquer off and reapply.

First time paint repairs...

The min temp you should paint 2K paint in is about 18 degrees.

You won't be able to just wet n dry the laquers off, your best off smoothing off the top of the laquer with 800 grit and then start again.

If the laquer has gone all frosty then you have probably got something wrong with the laquer somewhere. what laquer are you using and what thinners & what hardener?

We just used lacquer from Halford suitable for two pack paint...
Didnt use thinners or hardener...
