Hi, i hope someone can give me some advice, i changed the speedo cable on my mini mayfair 1986 1000cc today and after coming a way with a lot less skin on my arms and fingers the speedo still does not work.

I tested the speedo before properly fitting the cable to the gearbox with a drill and the speedo went up to about 60 mph.

so i went ahead and fitted the cable, still it does not work, could it be the drive unit, and where do i buy a new one of these, or could the speedo be faulty, it just sits at 5mph all the time.

one thing i did do was disconnect the cable from the back of the speedo and drove a couple of feet but it did not seem to move?

Any advice would REALLY be appreciated.

Cheers in advance

Rob

have you checked that the pinion in the gearbox is moving when the gearbox goes round (simple way to check, remove speedo cable from back of speedo, if you can twist is then it's not engaged on the speedo take off on the gearbox, or the takeoff is fubar )

also is it the right cable for the speedo ?

Cheers for the reply Guessworks.

Have just disconnected it from the back of the speedo and used a pair of needle nose pliars to try and turn it, the only movement i got was the slight flex in the cable so it looks like the take off from the gearbox, where would i get one of those from?

The man in the shop said it was the correct cable it was almost identical to the one that come out as when i bought it i thought it was not long enough and made him check it was not for a center console speedo and he assured me it was correct.

It definatly is not working and i can't turn it, so i thought it must be the drive unit that bolts into the gearbox, Guessworks did say that this could be fubar, i think the speedo is working as i atatched a drill to it so the speedo drive unit must be faulty. Could i be wrong?

If is is fubar where do i get a replacement are they still avaliable?

if you CAN'T turn the cable then it's engaged and nothing wrong..... simple way to check it's going round with the gearbox is to raise one front wheel off the ground and rotate, the speedo cable should go round...

This means it's the connection between the speedo cable and the speedo itself. The cable has a square end, but if the speedo connection has rounded then it'll only work sporadically.

Finally managed to get time to check cable, god knows what has happened, undid the speedo cable again and it has sheered off in the drive unit. Is it possible to undo the drive unit while the engine is in, i take it is the bolt i can feel near it, if so what size bolt is it. I think the speedo unit may be fubar so have ordered another one.

Does it just pull out?
