does anyone know, or know how to find out, how many MINI's there are registered in this country and on the road?

Minis or MINIs? I'm sure BMW will proudly say how many of the latter is likely 90%+ of the ones flogged must still be on the road. Only DVLA would know how many Minis still have a current tax disc.
