Right lets get this over with

i find i can only fill my tank about 1/2 way up lol what am i doing wrong?!?

oh and i can fathom what a switch i have does i has a pic that looks like the handbrake symbol you (!) that sort of thing except it wont light unless i switch it then it er well switches back off.............

And that switch you are talking about is one of Austins great secrets, some say its the brake warning light though.

Look at the top of your brake master cylinder it's got two electrical connections.
When there is brake fluid the float goes up and this connection is broken, so if you press the button it doesn't come on.

If you're low on brake fluid then the float drops, an electrical connection is made, and when you press the button to complete the circuit your light comes on.

Now all go press your buttons, I bet they ALL come on as the connections are nearly always missing, broken or so corroded they don't work anyway!

oh and yeh it really will only fill the tank half way the other day i got £9 odd and it wouldnt let me put any more in! the gauge inside the car registers as half full so i dont know what to think!

What sort of mini is it? carb, spi, mpi?!?

my MPI gauge reads incorrect, i use to only be able to get £16 to the brim, then i got seriously low on petrol, about 4 mm under the red line, and i can get £20 in now!!

i found I had to have most of the fuel pump thing half way out to fill up my tank, if you put it all in it cuts out with hardly any fuel in!

your fuel sender unit has probably got tangled up. i had that problem except it was the other way round. read: full, 3/4s, half then straight to in the red of empty.

i got seriously low on petrol, about 4 mm under the red line, and i can get £20 in now!!

That's not how the brake test lamp works at all!
All the switch does is check that the bulb hasn't blown, nothing else. If the light comes on when you press the switch then that is perfect. If the light comes on at any other time then your brake fluid is low. Why do so many people find it so hard to understand that, it's not rocket science!
It's a good idea from time to time to check that the float switch is still working by taking the top off of the master cylinder and letting the fluid drain out of the cap, the lamp should come on when you do.

As for your fuel tank, you should fill it till you can see fuel at the bottom of the neck. If you are doing that then you have a full tank. A full tank is 34ish litres so if you aren't able to get that much in when you go from empty to full on the gauge then the gauge is knackered.
