I have started to use my PSP to watch films while on the train coming home from work but the sound quality is diabolical. Does anybody else experience this or have a solution?

I don't think I can help, but has it always been rubbish? What are the symptoms? Is it crackly or anything, or just generally rubbish?

Are you using the PSP earphones?

I found as soon as I used my own Sony ones it got better, still not great but better.

My psp has a low volume when you plug in the earphones, but it's ok when you listen to movies through the actual speakers (i.e. no earphones).

Instead, i have some sony earphones that have an extra volume dial so this further increases the volume to a more satisfactory level.

Yeah I had that problem but with Sony earphones from my MP3 player I had no problems. I dont know why it is, but the PSP earphones are just poo. Which is surprising really as Sony are usually really good at audio products, I would say more so than their visual ones.
