done a search , but nothing found ,

1999 mpi with factory rover alarm,

when i switch the car off im only getting a solid red light showing on both alarm & immobliser settings

prior to this i was getting a slow continious flash on just immobliser and a rapid flash then onto a slow continious upon setting the alarm .

now no matter what i do , its just a solid red .

ive tried both my fobs and also re syncing , but no joy .

cars working fine but a tad worried about me battery ending up drained .

any ideas
phil...

it sounds like the ignition is staying on or one of the door switches are not operating correctly. after you go driving around and shut it off, can you restart the car without using the fob.

Drive the car and lock up , wait approx 30 secs and solid red light appears . You can only start again by pressing the fob each time .

i'll check my switches , also if i arm the alarm it will only go off when i turn the key in the ignition , not when i enter the car or rock it hard side to side.

so basically with the alarm set should i be able to enter the car , even when using my key !!! i sure it used to go off unless i de-armed it.

bit lost now........

cheers phil

the alarm will sound when you open either doors or the bonnet or boot lid. if you can arm the system and open a door then the immobilizer is not protecting them.

Once you've finished driving you have 2 choices:

30 seconds after switching off the engine AND opening the DRIVER'S door the immobiliser will kick in...
If you press the arm button on the fob, then the alarm will kick in too. the alarm doesn't turn itself on...

Have a look at the switches, make sure they're all OK, one hasn't worked itself loose... the solid light is usually an indication that a door is open...

Thanks for the confirmation on operating the alarm , now im going to take a look at all the switches but just to confirm these are the black compressing type situated on doors , bonnet and boot .

If so can these be removed for inspection and to check connections, im sure its going to these !!

ive recently had the engine out to have a guessworks gearbox fitted(feb 08) all was well then, and just last week i had it undersealed aswell , it was when i got it back from undersealing the red light was on. I just thought that knowing what garages are like they just had few problems with the alarm going off and randomly pressed any or both buttons confusing the system and this would sort itself out .

obviously not lol.

Pretty certain it is one of your switches - most likely bonnet if you have had the engine out - probably got battered.

Just take the screw out and pull the switch out of the aperature. depress it and start testing to see which one is at fault

Also, make sure that the area around where it screws in is all nice and clean - I believe that the switches themselves are earthed through the screws to the body...

just a quickie.....

problem was the interior light .............

does not light up when doors opened , its part of the alarm = solid red light means a fault ,

so now i know =]

the alarm is fully working with the interior light switched to the off position,

so i need to sort this little problem out now..

but hey at least its sorted

As far as I am aware the interior light has no bearing on alarm operation.

Coincidence?

How bizarre! Is your alarm after market?

My alarm is after market.

I'm not sure how the actuators are wired, but only a couple of days ago, I noticed my interior light comes on when I open the boot. How convenient! >_<

I had a similar problem which related to an interior light I'd fitted to the boot. See the attached link.

The alarm only pics up one signal from the two door switches, which is before the interior light but after the door switches. It is highly concievable that there is a ground fault on the interior light causing this, and why when you switched it off the fault disapeared. It may be that thebukb in the interior light is i blown and was still switched on? this would then put a permanent ground feed onto the door switch circuit. without the light being on. The light itelf could be faulty or wired incorrectly.
