I'm running my Smart with a reversed selector box, so I can't use the reverse light switch on the box. Can I have a manual switch on the gear stick? Is it legal/MOT failure? I intend to have a dash warning light, just incase I forget while driving forwards.

Cheers.

....if the car wasn't manufactured with them (is that right) or is it just if there's not one there you don't need it if there is one it needs to be working

Can you not reassemble the selector the right way round?

The yoke on the selector shaft is double ended.

true you dont need a reverse light to pass an MOT. i work at renault and we never test the reverse light. i am doing the same as you with the manual switch.

Reverse lamps aren't a part of the MOT test, and you can wire one in on a manual switch legally so long as it has a warning lamp that is visible from the driving seat
