Hi
I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but can anyone help?

My son has managed to rip his wing mirror out before even getting his Mini Neon on the road ( he's not 17 until June)!

Unfortunately, the threaded studs that it screws into have been pulled out, and it appears they're a sort of rivet fixing thru the door skin. Can I get replacements and if so how do you fix them? Otherwise, I can't see how to fix them back in properly? ( see pics)

You could fix them back with liquid metal after roughing them up to give a good key, or chuck them away and use nuts and bolts instead.

Thanks for the suggestions Jonny. Sorry, I'm not very technical at this sort of stuff - how do you use nuts and bolts when it's a blind fixing?

Thanks

wind the window down, remove the inner and outer seal trim and you should be able to hold a 10mm nut behind and wind a short 10mm bolt through the mirror from the outside (get your son to help).
same idea as blind fixing but less hassle.

alternatively - go to a local bodyshop as they may be able to fit a new blind fixing.

I found that if you go to Halfords and check out the display with the fuses, connectors etc, on there you will find white plastic push in clips that fit the hole you'll have in the skin perfectly, and your window securing screws fit them perfectly.

So much easier and I have yet to have any hassle. They were only about 30p for a pair if I remember right.

Tony

PS, just noticed your fixings were in wrong anyway, they are supposed to be the other way around and fitted flush

Yes, if the photo on the right shows them as they were fitted they are in wrong and that is probably why one pulled out. You need a Riv-nutting tool rather than a rivetter, they are different. You can get one complete with a selection of metric Riv-nuts from Merlin Motorsport for about £15.00. you may need to hammer and dolly those holes back to shape because they won't hold a Riv-nut as they are now. Or you may get away with just using a larger size. The standard parts are M5 I think so you might find an M6 will fit. If you're going to use a nut and bolt, you won't get an M10 through! People on the forum have an irritating habit of referring to nuts and bolts by the size of the bolt head rather than the shank diameter which I think is what's happened here.

Hey, thanks for all the ideas everyone. One problem is, I'm in Guernsey, so haven't got Halfords or Merlin Motorsport, unless I can buy this stuff mail order. Anyway, at least I know what to look for now. Son's got slim guitar player's fingers, so he can stick them down the window and use that method for now. And sorry, my fault, I probably put the nuts back the wrong way round! >_<

Merlin Motorsport will do mail order, or you could definitely get them mail order from any tool place like machine mart, etc. Could probably find them on Guernsey, there's bound to be a motor factors there!
