Hi folks,

On my usual run to work on saturday i discovered that the 'SRS' light stayed on!!
I have checked the seatbelt connections in the rear bins and they look ok.
Has anyone else had any probs??

The usual candidate is the rotary coupler in the steering wheel, but could be anything.

If you dont know what your doing leave well alone and consult a garage. Having said that its straightforward to remove and replace.

Get it checked out, its as safety critical as your brakes etc!

I have had the wheel off, is the rotary thingy the wire winding?

Its the yellow wire that clips in to the airbag and goes off down the steering column.

You can get them off Ebay reasonably priced.

Erm, no it isn't. That's why it's called a SUPPLEMENTARY restraint system. When the light is on the system is safe and the car is safe without it, SRS sytems fail safe so they won't deploy by accident. The only issue with it is that if you crash it won't deploy. Having said that you should definitely get it fixed but I would seriously caution you against playing with the airbag yourself. Firstly you don't know whether the clockspring actually is the problem or not, the SRS ECU needs to be read to find out what the fault is. It is quite possible to replace airbag system parts at home if you work in a safe and careful manner but they are dangerous things and if you aren't confident don't go anywhere near it. It can kill you if you get it wrong. Never do anything to the SRS system without first disconnecting the car's battery and leaving the system to drain for half an hour. You might even find that if you do that and then re-connect it the fault will clear itself. Once the system is drained you can start work but remember these points:
Never sit in the drivers seat to work on removing the airbag, stay out of the car and clear of the wheel. Work from below and behind the wheel. The bag unscrews from the wheel quite easily. Once it is disconnected from the computer it is not safe.
Hold a bag with the explosive side facing away from you and don't point it at anyone.
Store it face up on a shelf where nothing will fall on it and where there is room around it in case it deploys. Place nothing on it.

give wood and pickett a call. they do a module that allows the airbag to be removed, and a proper steering wheel to be fitted. also note that airbags need to be serviced every 10 years, as they do deteriorate over time.

Why would you want to remove a possibly life saving device just to stop a light from coming on?

Hi chaps sorry to hijack the thread a little but i also have a quick question with regard to the SRS light. I have removed the seatbelt tensioning devices due to now having harnesses fitted to my mini, this means that the SRS light is now permanently on. Is there anyway to get the light to go out or will i simply have to remove the lamp? Also does this render the airbag dangerous bearing in mind i also have buckets fitted so the seat angle/position/height is likely to be different.
Cheers

I beleive the airbag will still work. Unless you removed the fuse which would disable teh entire srs system. As to whether it is dangerous..there is an ideal distance etc to be from teh airbag that is why women who drive with the seat fully forward and crash end up ith a broken nose and/or black eyes. The only way to turn the lamp off is to remove the bulb.

On the airbag servicing every ten years. I have heard this before but does anyone know where to get a new airbag pack? I guess all Mpi drivers will have to remove the airbags?
