is there a way to check if its a bulb problem for the clock light with out taking out the dash because it seems to be quite a lot of effort for a niggly problem?

Assuming it's the Cooper Sport 500 in your profile, take the radio out (you'll need a set of special pins - available from most motor factors, halfrauds, etc.). As long as you have reasonably small fingers, you should be able to just about reach the bulb holder. I think they are just a push-fit.

Hi,

I tried that but i couldn't really feel anything defined.. if they are push fit should i just try and pull out the bulb the main lump bit behind it?

Thanks

It's been quite a while since I did it on my Mum's, but I think the bulb holder just pulls out of the tube type bit on the back of the clock. It also helps if you remove the metal radio cage from the dash - bit more room to get your hand in.
