One bit of news what hasn't made the national headlines today is about Dave Leaning, a marine who is plodding/sliding/stumbling up the middle of Norway to raise cash for, & awareness of, landmine victims. Here is his homepage and here is his Youtube page. You'll need a bit of time to look around the sites and appreciate what kind of man he is.

What struck me was

His service record and the reason for his adventure

The fact that he assumed it would be a "one man alone against the elements" affair, but it turned out to be a "one man plus the amazing kindness of a whole bunch of Scandinavian families" thing

Some really cool navigation & survival kit >_<

Anyone like me who often has trouble with the idea of soldiers killing each other and civilians over politicians' greed can forget all that and rejoice in this excellent effort.
