How do you tell if a clutch release bearing is knackered? My mini is failing teribly on the clutch aspect of things. It shudders when pulling away (rather annoying especially when driving in stop-start traffic), it'll stop doing this when you rev higher (around 2500-3000rpm). I figure it's either the clutch release bearing (if it get's sticky or worn) or part of the friction material is on the plate, and stuck there.

I'll repete this again, although many of you will already know.... The mini's been sat up for 4 or so years, and only got it running in the summer. the clutch was stuck, I got it unstuck by warming the engine up and then starting in gear.

Thank you for advice/help!

Just sounds like it's slipping to me. Is there oil leaking out from the clutch weep hole under the clutch housing?

How would slipping cause judder (and shudder lol)? I can't see any leaks from anywhere on the car, it's been parked up on concrete for 2 weeks and nothings come out. It doesn't rev wildly but go nowhere, if I rev it more when pulling away it'll stop juddering.

The release bearing effects nothing once you let the pedal out. Symptoms would be failed wheel bearing type grinding noises when you press the pedal 'n difficulty in engaging gears.

If the friction surface is slick (glazed or oily) and there's much play in the components, the plates can bounce around a bit as they engage and cause judder.

However, since the car sat for several years and you say the judder goes away once you're under speed, I'd suggest you take a moment to look at the engine mounts and steadies.

In answer to your original question though about symptoms for a failing throw-out bearing, I usually associate that with extreme noise when you push the clutch pedal down. You may hear a screaming whine when the bearings on its last legs. As it is starting to fail you may just hear a grinding sound. In any case, the sounds are only present when you depress the clutch pedal.

Not sure what I said previously to make people beleive this.... BUT it's clutch related shudder! It does not happen at low speeds or high, but when pulling away! The engine doesn't knock when I let off the throttle. The clutch does make a very slight whining noise when you press the pedal. But only very slightly.

EDIT: Just seen my origional post - by revving high I mean rev higher and slip the clutch more.

Another clutch related question - Can you adjust verto type clutchs? ATM the biting point is near the top of the pedal travel... someone told me just now that it could be this?

Yes I would start by changing the clutch, but also check all the rubber mountings including subframe mounts.

How difficult should it be... I have access to limited tools (although I can always get access to a pit, engine lift ect at a cost). Is it

1) Unbolt engine
2) Take out stuff on the clutch side of the engine bay (things like washer bottle, clutch slave (slave plate?))
3) Move clutch side of engine up (using trolloy jack/hoist)
4) Unbolt cover
5) Change clutch
6) Refit

How much would it cost at a garage?
