Hi,

We are having difficulty with the lights on our 1992 Mini cooper 1.3i. The side lights work, the dim lights come on when the ignition is running, the main beam works when 'flashed' but we have no dipped beam. The fuses all seem to be ok. Is the Dim / Dip relay the most likely cause of this problem?

Sounds like it. Try smacking the relay first to free it up, often a good temporary cure.

Failing that check the bullet connectors behind the grille: -

Wiring connections at the front of the car behind the grille: -

Earth is the Black wires
Sidelights are Red/Red with Green
Headlights are thick Blue with Red
Main Beam thick Blue with White

When mine did this, it was the the connections behind the grille that was the problem.

Hi.
waiting for the new relay so hope that solves it but thanks for all your replies. Hope it's not the stalk because we just fitted a new one! (The indicator swirch jammed)

Will play with the wires and let you know.
Thanks again

agree with taffy .. mine did the same, spend days figuring it out and it was the bullett connectors that arebehind the grill near the air intake pipe, try squeezing them with the lights on , thats how i fouind mine out ... the dim/dip on mine is goosed anyway. goodluck

It's not likely to be the grille bullets in this case because the dim-dip setting is working fine, this uses the same headlamp wiring as the conventional dip circuit.

when you say 'dim-dip' relay you don't mean the pink one behind the dash as this has nothing to do with the main beam circuit.... but rather the dipped beam when the ignition is on...

Quite simply, if the flash works and the main beam don't then it's the stalk, then it's either the +ve feed from the light circuit to the main beam switch which is failed or the switch (stalk) itself...

It was new so I'm hoping it's not at fault. Is there an easy way to check?

Cracked it ! There was a loose wire in the indicator stalk. All lights working now. Thanks for all your advice
