imo you should concentrate on lightening your car and improving handling before tuning your engine - its cheaper and just as effective.
you'll probably find a stage 1 1275 propperly tuned on a rolling road in a lightened mini will be faster than your average small engined modern hatchback.
standard gearbox will be fine, if you're talking about mild tuning, 1:5:1 rockers should be adequete improvement on the standard cam, whichever that may be. not that iv done this myself, just from reading various topics on this website and in the Visard tuning the A series book - which i strongly reccomend you buy.

concentrate on your cam before rockers. Doesnt work tother way round. A 286 would be a nice cam if your after a bit of speed, anything more in a 1275 wouldnt be too brilliant to drive (bad idle). So SW10 or Kent 286 or Kent 286 scatter.
Think about rockers AFTER the cam, durations more important than ridiculous lift. Remember you need a nice carb to feed it. HIF44 would be ideal and only about £30 upwards.
