I check the coolant by looking in the radiator, see if its full or not

If its an MPi, then take the top off and have a look inside the bottle.
If its a carb model then take the rad cap off, the water level should be roughly 1cm from the filler neck.

I've only ever seen one on a daytrip to a country estate. But I took many photos and made as many notes as I could!Yes whatever he said... Ive never seen an injection engine. im not posh enough.

As I said in my post above. Take the rad cap off. The water level should be 1cm from the filler neck.

You open the radiator cap (not when the engine is hot...) and look inside. The top of the radiator core should be about an inch underwater. Some rads have a loop of wire in the neck that shows where the level should be. So long as there is water in the top tank and you can't see the rad cores it will be fine.
