that might be your screen wash bottle actually, like mine.
I check the coolant by looking in the radiator, see if its full or not

Either that or he has an Mpi, with a front mounted radiator, which doesn't have a header tank on it, so will have an expansion bottle somewhere. If this is the case then its unlikely you'll get mixed up with the windscreen washer bottle as it should be in the boot.

If its an MPi, then take the top off and have a look inside the bottle.

If its a carb model then take the rad cap off, the water level should be roughly 1cm from the filler neck.

Take the cap off and there should be a metal pin thing, like a bar, horizontally. I've been told to fill it to that, which is approx 1cm lower than the neck like Jammy said.

I've only ever seen one on a daytrip to a country estate. But I took many photos and made as many notes as I could! :dontgetit:

As I said in my post above. Take the rad cap off. The water level should be 1cm from the filler neck.

That is the radiator. There is a small tank at the top of it but call it the radiator, it will be much less confusing.

You open the radiator cap (not when the engine is hot...) and look inside. The top of the radiator core should be about an inch underwater. Some rads have a loop of wire in the neck that shows where the level should be. So long as there is water in the top tank and you can't see the rad cores it will be fine.
