Looking to restore a Mk1 998 Cooper, what sort of value do they have in good condition? It could cost a lot to restore and there is a lot of the original trim missing.

15K, what! It's actually a friend of mine who is considering the restoration and I posted the question on his behalf. If a Mk1 998 is worth that much what is a MK1 1275 S worth - I should think you need a mortgage, do people actually pay that sort of money? Gob smacked! When I think of all the MK1 S types and Mini Mokes I've owned..........cheers, I will tell him!

I would have said 7 - 9 K for a restored mk1 Cooper in excellent condition.

I'm clearly NOT in a position to guess what a Mk1 Cooper would sell for in the U.K. However, 15k GBP? I think not.

The Cooper, though increasing in value, has traditionally not commanded as much money a an -S. There are also levels of restoration/quality on a restoration. A concours condition -S might reach 15k GBP, might.

My car is a well sorted -S with largely original parts. It's value has bee appraised at around $17k. With today's exchange rate that's probably a little over 8k GBP. Minis, Coopers, and -S(s) all get imported from the U.K. to the U.S. so the value of my car will (if anything) be appraised a bit higher here than it's worth in the U.K.

As for finding parts and the cost of restoration, finding the bits may not be as hard as you think. Bodywork is bodywork whether it's a Cooper, and -S, or a Mini, fixing the body all costs the same. If your intent is to finish a car for sale, finding a Cooper with largely intact bodywork and paint, then fitting the missing trim will net you the largest return for the money. If you want to own the car and keep it, the cost of the parts to restore it must be weighed against the personal satisfaction you'll have owning it.

Consider this an unsolicited and unscientific follow up.

Though the following should not be taken as Gospel, visit the automotive section of eBay and search for Minis. There are rare exceptions, but you don't start seeing a lot of "classic Minis" (non-BMW) until the price drops below 6k GBP. P&L have a lot listed on eBay and theirs are among the higher priced. Consider this one that has the history of being owned by the Duke of Westminster:

(item # 360015971276)

There's also a fully restored Mk2 Cooper on eBay (item # 330221090986) where the commercial seller is asking for 9.5k GBP. That car has some "non-period" accessories and therefore may be a bit overvalued.

You can also visit the Mini Mania site and visit the "Cars for Sale" / "Private Sellers" page. HOWEVER, when you see a Mk1 or Mk2 Cooper listed DO open the link and look at the car. A tremendous number of cars that are for sale over here are re-VINs. As soon as you look at the car and read the listing you'll see that the car lacks key external features like external door hinges. When you read the text you find that such cars are often described as "196X Mini Cooper updated to 1992 specs". Hogwash. The real Coopers in the U.S. appear to be going for somewhere around $8-10k depending on their condition.
