hello, just after something a bit different to the usual photo, VIN number prefixes !!! :P

I'm trying to fill in the holes in my understanding of the mini's VIN number system, i have a good understanding of most of it but there are a few areas that could be improved on.

I'm particularly interested in the VIN numbers from any limited edition minis (all ages) and the later MPI cars (cooper and non cooper) also really want to get some numbers for the cooper sports 500's and the non cooper 1275 carb cars

although i will be happy with any numbers at all especially 80's and onwards cars :D

very important: i only want the letters that make up the prefix of the number. please do not post the actual "sequential build number"

EDIT: just to clear this up, the prefix may actually contain numbers. most 80's numbers will look SOMETHING like this SAX-X-L2S1N20-@@@-A (A may or may not appear at the end) and 90's numbers have an 11 digit prefix like this SAX-XN-N-A-Y-B-B-D-@@@@@@. it's the @@@ bits that you should not be posting on an open forum :w00t:

if you dont want to post on the open forum, please feel free to PM or E-mail me.

please include: prefix, year, make, and model

example:

SAXXNNAMBBD
1990
ROVER
CARB MAINSTREAM COOPER

many thanks

Anorak

oh wow, john thanks for that :)

be be honest, most of the vin number info on there i already have but the other stuff is fantastic ;)

the thing is, those lists are not always clear on how the limited editions are classed. the old/Early VIN systems were very detailed but the later "rover" ones are not.

so far it would seem that the LEs simply share the same VINs a the Mayfair and city, depending on which car they were based on, where as the RSP and the mainstream have a different code (A/B).

also need more info on MPi's as i'm not sure if the coopers have a separate code, seeing as they have the same engine and all that.

thank you Natalie, i did get both your PM's :errr:

just what I'm after, thanks

So is there a difference between the Cooper and non-Cooper Twin-Point Minis after all anorak?

well I've had enough Mpi numbers to be able to say yes on this one.

it would seem that they use the same system that the very first carb and injection cars used with the 6th letter giving the class of car. N for cooper, W for Mayfair, Y for sprite.

when the MPI was introduced, this is marked by the 8th letter, M for cooper carb, D for non cooper carb, Y for Spi cooper, X for Spi non cooper and Z for MPi

but it now seems that the 10th letter has been changed as well, but not the mark the MPi engine. why I'm not sure. as you know the 10th letter on an RSP is A, on a mainstream and injection car its B.

i have a 1996 (very early Mpi) that still has a B, but by 2000 both cooper and non cooper models have a Y.

now the 10th letter is supposed to mark "model change" but without more info i cant really decide what model change the Y refers to.

as i said before, my current info has no mention of this change.

Mine is a completely different kettle of fish - possibly owing to its LHD cousins on the continent. At last check mine is VINd as LHD - when it was built as RHD... I'll double check this but I promise thats the case!

yes i would be very grateful if you could send me your VIN, cheers

also i need loads more from 1996 to 2000 to try to figure out what the tenth letter "model change" refers to. some have a B and some have a Y but i need to know when this was changed :gimme:
