I have had a virus for about 4 weeks, started with sore throat, chest infection, blocked sinus.. snot etc, and have been taking various painkillers and sinex nose spay to keep things clear.

Anyway, cough started to go but then i started getting blocked and popping ears, they weren't painful until last night when i sneezed and got a huge amount of pressure stuck in my left ear. no amount of nose blowing, swallowing or ear wiggling would shift it and it got worse and worse...i couldn't sleep and just thrashed around and pulled my own hair and stuff, at 1am i callled the out of hours GP and was told to take painkillers, drink water and not lay flat.. so i sat in a chair in agony until until 530am when there was a feeling (and noise) like being struck by lightening ( i was nearly sick) i was horrible, the pain died down after that but i have been left completley deaf in my left ear and it crackles painfully when i swallow. i have been able to sleep for about 5 hours this morning but now the deafness is starting to worry me.

How can i best configure my dolby 7.1 system so i can still enjoy Star Wars with one ear?

Gav dont panic mate, ive had that happen before. As soon as you said "there was a feeling (and noise) like being struck by lightening" i knew what you ment. You should be able to sleep tonight and IIRC youll wake up and itll be fine.
I tried everything to get rid of it, cotton bud in the ear soap in the ear blah blah.

The crackles in your ear, did/does it happen when you shake your head too? it did to me lol

I went deaf in one ear once and went through a similar thing. It was just a build of of C**p, managed to free it all out with a few bottles of Otex ear drops! lol.

My ex's sister used to have really bad problems with her ears, and she had to have them syringed evry 5 or 6 months. My ex however used to use these things called 'hoppy' (sp?) candles. You lay down on one side and put it in your ear, then set light to it. It melts the wax in your ear and sucks it up. You put them out when there is say 3 inches or so left on the candle. You can then either throw it out like most normal people. Alternatively, you can do what my ex used to and open them up to see what was coming out. The dark wax is all the old C**p and the light stuff is the newer wax.

I used to mildly mock her. Then she did it to me when I couldnt defend myself, and it did actually make a difference.

I know it doesnt really help you, for which I apologise. :)

Im always blocked and full of phlegm.

Hope you get better soon. Feeling sick and stuff is C**p

Sounds like you've burst your ear drum, Gav.
Have you been to the Doc's yet?
You should have it looked at. Odds are that the mebrane will fix itself, but you're at risk of more infection at the mo if it has ruptured, so they might want you to have some drops. :)

Think it's all to do with the Euston Station tube ;)

Hot drinks are good and some simulated yawning, they open when you swallow :)

Try 'n lay off blowing yer nose too.

Yeah as juju says it sounds like it has popped - I know it blooming well hurts! Best thing you can really do if you don't fancy sitting in a waiting room with everyone coughing on you is just to stick some cotton wool in your ear and apply ear drops every so often, its pretty much what they did to me on the countless occasions mind you they got fed up in the end and just told me "ay it'll b reyt"

By any chance do you smoke and did you take meds for the chest infection?

Non Smoker, i was on amoxicillin for the chest but didn't do anything after 8 days the doc told me to stop. Apparently i have a virus which appeared in london about 6 weeks ago and has spread everywhere, it isn't affecting anyone over 60 suggesting it has been here before and of the people affected by it 80%are adults and 20% chlidren.. they don't know where it has come from yet.

I managed to speak to a doctor about 10 mins ago (no appointments till wednesday PM) he said drink water, take nurofen, paracetamol and rest, Most ear aches are caused by viruses and therefore anti-biotics won't help and even if they did, it would take 36-48hours before they started to work.

Just annoyed that i'm deaf and got no balance at the moment.

I have exactly what you have atm a little while ago. Get to the doctors and they get a jet washer in your ear and clean it out good ;)
If not, Warm oil...No not castrol, That wont work :errr: Olive oil.

Hope this helps :)

Been to docs... the wife got an appointment for her so i went to and got ears looked at.
It's an outer ear infection (tube leading from outer ear to eardrum) which has become inflamed and completley closed up. Painkillers do nothing for it, he has however given me antibiotics.

take good care of it, my uncle had an infection left untreated and he's now deaf permanently from this ear, eardrum was not salvageable.
