Hello

After advice! Some people say the mini-spares sc transfer gears are no good, and only buy JK, others say differently.....???

BASICALLY im only getting them for the noise, i know this sounds shallow, but the way i see it, i LOVE the noise, have been in many cars with them. I have my mini for enjoyment - Nicer noise = More enjoyment.

im running 70 - 80 bhpATW obvisly they are not essential at this power, but i will be looking to gain another 10 - 15 in the future.

They will be installed properly.

SO what are the differences? who has what.

Many thanks

Edit: Nuts, mis-spelled the title lol

Dave :)

I have been running mini sport ones for the last 2 years, i had my car rolling roaded at 139bhp (flywheel) & 115bhp (at wheels)

I then wound the boost up from 11psi to 22psi, i don't know what the power was at 22psi but it was a damm site quicker..

The ones i had are essentially the same as the minispares ones and i had no trouble with them at all apart from the rear bush in the primery gear was quite worn which after 2 years of my right foot isn't too bad at all, these are easily replaced.

My straight cut box failed before the drops...

oooh s/c drops, although they are quite misleading.
Leonard, when you say JK drops are noisier im guessing you mean when you put your foot on the clutch they rattle loudly, rather than they "whine" louder, MED's new roller bearing s/ drops rattle very loudly.
The reason i say this is because people often think that the louder the whine is better. MEH erm its not, really. I am another person who loes the noise they make BUT the general rule is;

Well made drops will be quieter than the not so well made drops. You can never tell until they are on a car. Sometimes they get noisier after you rebuild the box, and sometimes they dont.

But to answer your question, Minispares drops are perfectly fine. I havent known anyone to ever have any problems with them. I will be ordering mine within the next week or two.

And by the way, i know your wanting to know which drops are regarded as the best but why couldnt you just ask that rather than come onto TMF and say "are your sponsors drops C**p"?

Depends wich Minispares gears you use as to how noisey they are. The other bonus with the Minispares gears is that you can swap and change the input and primary gears for different tooth counts and alter the overall gear ratio, they share the same idler gear. JKD do not.

If you want not such a loud SC gear noise, use 24/ 24 teeth gears, if you are looking at an all out growler of an engine then the 23/23 is said to be the strongest, a little noisier though. So, id expect the 22/22 to be extremely noisey.

You can have any combination of gears to alter the ratio, 22/22, 22/23, 22/24, 23/22, 23/23, 23/24, 24/22, 24/23, 24/24.

Many of the Turbo guys preffer the Minispares gears over others, with Minisports being the least used.

I have the Minispares S/C drops with the Timken idler and a Clubman SCCR gearset and have had absolutely no probs in the nearly 40,000 miles since I fitted them. They are on my 1380 which has just under 100bhp & just under 100lb-ft.

Great! thanks for all the replys, been really helpfull!

err :P i didnt say they were C**p.. im sorry but just because there our sponser i dont see why people shouldnt be honest about there products, ive spent ALOT of money with mini spares and find there service to be top knotch....because it is, thats why i use them. Im just saying that 3 reliable sources have said they were inferior to JKD. :)

Gunna look more into what you said Sprocket, would be nice to change raito's fairly simply.

As alex has said, the ones I use have no chatter at idle, but when you start moving the all too familiar SC drop noise is evident... and likewise with the minispares ones, are interchangeable about the common idler gear for alternate ratios.

hello pie, they dont chatter very much at idle, but wine very loud. i think the thickness of the gearbox gasket affects the noise, as it affect the mesh of the gears
