Hi,

I've been looking at a couple of 1275 S crankshafts for sale that have had their original casting numbers ground off (but are re-stamped EN40B/AEG480).
I was told that they have been balanced, wedged, or polished. So they have no original raised casting numbers - only hand stamped replacement numbers. Is there any way of determining that they are in fact Cooper S EN40B cranks. Anybody can grind off casting numbers and re-stamp as EN40B/AEG480. I am not able to see them in person, only in pictures. I didn't make an offer and lost out to another bidder, and so now I'm wondering (for future reference) if there is a way to ID the real thing. And if anyone knows of one for sale, please send me a contact.

Thanks Joe

The following casting numbers...

AEG330 EN40B not cross drilled 970cc
AEG171 EN40B not cross drilled 1071cc
AEG315/6 EN40B not cross drilled, nitrided, 1.625" 1275cc
AEG479/480 EN40B cross drilled, nitrided, 1.625" 1275cc

If they have been ground off then any bodies guess, but if you're after a modified crank then what's so special about a cooper S crank ?

eg a crank which may have started life as a fairly std A+ crank which has been modified to be used in a miglia is going to be a better crank than a std cooper S crank !

So... what does that mean? What mods are done and what about them makes the crank better?

A miglia spec crank is has had the following work done:

stroked, relieved, wedged, and balanced.

I believe it's favourable to have a 4 bolt steel centre main bearing cap too.
