Quite a few questions sorry guys :)

Ive got a 1100 engine and a 12g295 head the engine is off getting rebuilt at the moment. The machinist said it is not worth fitting a sports camshaft??
Do people generally agree with this? He said this because i am on a budget and fitting a camshaft means i will have to replace valve springs valve seats and other parts..

Is this correct? Is there any camshafts that i can use and run with everything standard??

Would i be fine with this camshaft?
http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=38155

OR... Would it be worth going for this instead?
http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=35807

Finally is fitting these camshafts to the head hard and what about other parts? Anyone know of any DIY links + stuff to read up on to gain knowledge?

Much appreciated everyone
Cheers :( :)

1100's have LOADS of potential, just as any other A-series does.

The standard 1100 cam is good anyway, but I totally disagree with your guy saying it's not worth it. After all your standard cam wont be able to make the best use of all the extra juice your better head will throw at it... The hotter cam will VASTLY improve the engine,... double valve springs are not essential but a nice addition. With a haynes manual etc you'd be able to fit a new head and Cam in a day easily.

Cam wise I'd recommend The Swiftune SW5,... It's great on emmissions, loads of torque (which is what the 1098's are all about) and gives a smooth, low idle. Good results have also been reported from the Piper HR255 cam.

Thanks Retro!
So the swiftune 255 is better than the one i was looking at ? Also i wouldnt need to be replacing anything?

But if i did want to go and replace stuff what would u recommend replacing? Just double valve springs from single??

Cheers mate!

I had an 1100 engine once many moons ago. it was an "old man" special. i had the 295 head on it and an MG metro cam. was a very nice car to drive and was fairly quick. just used std valve springs. No point going to doubles as the 1100 wont take the RPM. So valve bounce wont be an issue.

i purchased the above mentioned 1098 engine when he got bored and tried turbo power, lovely dream of an engine, torquey, economocal and fast! mg cam and 295 head combination really works if u make sure all your stuff is put together properly. it takes well to head mods too. i'll also vouch for the kent 256 as i fitted it after the 1100 had done a fair few thousand miles (about 50'000 hard abused miles), i rebuilt it and was short a new mg cam so went for the 256, better low down torque, maybe a little less up top than the mg but hardly noticable! i never had it dynoed after the rebuild, it made 54bhp@wheels when i got it.

it was on a turbo gearbox and diff too, at 70mph you could drop it back to 3rd gear and floor it all the way to 90mph for easy overtaking. i miss having something to use that engine in as i still have it!

Hello,

I'm building up my 1340 engine and it is fitted with a HR255 piper cam.
I'll be using 1:1.5 Hi lift rockers. Has anyone got any experience with this setup?
The reason I'll be using this cam is because I got it for free and it was already fitted with new followers.

Hi
years ago I built a 998 with the 295 head and used a Kent MD276 cam, loved that engine! produced 50hp at the wheels.

Here is a wide selection of cams and all their vital statistics which is very useful!

Personally i am looking to use a kent 246 in my 998.

P.S I do not pretend to have made this table, but as far as i can remember i found this on minifinity. The original author is John Clarke.

P.P.S apologies for the quality but .xls files are not allowed to be uploaded....

Adam,

I had my 1098 bored .040 (so 1130cc). I used a 12g295 (shaved .080" to get the proper capacity).
I am using the SW5 cam. (I bought the kit with lightened duplex chain and gear set)

The motor is fantasic. Idles smoothly and has good power up through 5500rpm or so. Don't want to rev a 1098 too much anyway. No rolling roads within 1000km, so I don't know the HP. I would guess 60 or so.
It is very quick. I use it for autocrossing. I am running a 3.44 FD

it takes well to head mods too.

There isn't a lot to do to the 295, it's that good already. Not worth it and all to easy to *melon* it up if you don't know what your doing.
