Out driving today and every time i break or it changes down gear there is an unearthly clonk in the back of the car! Ive checked stuff in the boot and the exhaust is not moving what else could it be?

Thank you

Bit upset about it as it sounds really bad hope gear box is not going!

i wouldnt worry about the gearbox

sounds to me like a bush has gone or bolt come loose somewhere, get a garage or a mechanically minded friend (if you arnt yourself) to have check over it, with any luck it should be a fairly cheap fix however, it might be worthwhile getting all the bushes changed if that was the problem as its not ideal to have new and old parts on each side of the car as it will probably start to stear wierdly or 'crab' along

i'd do it sooner rather than later too, as you've no idea what damage its doing elsewhere

thank you for the reply.

My boyfriend is a mechanic so he can pull it all apart! My dad replace the rear subframe and all the bushes not that long ago do they need changing that often? He also adjusted the handbrake a few weeks ago could that be it?

it could be the engine steady bush which would cause the exausht to move and catch on something

How long is not that long ago!
its definitly a bush or a bolt, as it happens when force is applied. such as braking and Gear Shifting

give the tail pipe a wiggle and bounce the car's bum up and down. Might just be an exhaust mounting or could be suspension related as when you brake the weight transfers to the front.

could be an engine mount mine has started doing this and i thought the noise was coming from the back but when i looked the two main engine mounts that go on the gearboxy bit had separated.

Well we had a look last night and it seems a bit of a mistery. took the wheels off and checked all that stuff bounced on all the car think it may be the center section of the exhaust so toby taking it to work next week to have a look!

Took dad out to hear the noise andcould hear it >_< so i mad toby drive and he said " I dont like that  " so that cant be good
