That's it! I've ran out of ideas. There is this horrible grating/squeaking noise which appears to be coming from the nearside wheel/brake. So far I've tried:

- Applying copper slip to the back of the brake pads.
- Fitting a new tapered washer thing, as the old one seemed a bit worn.
- cleared the buildup on the disk.

and a full service on top of that. Not even the mechanics had a clue, they said "it could be the gearbox". Then someone else tells me it could be a warped disk. With this, the recent spluttering/cutting out from damp weather (despite having new plugs), a clutch that makes rather loud creak noise occasionally and a mysterious water leak at the base of the steering column I am ready to sell the my mini and never look back. It also sounds very "hissy" at the front when its ticking over, if that makes sense.

I've owned minis for 6/7 years now and this it about to put me off. It really is the most irritating noise in the world. Please, any help would be much appreciated.

Is it only on braking? If so I would say warped discs.
Could be bearings if it happens all the time?

Cutting out in rain can be renewing the distributor cap etc or fitting a weathershield - best £20 I've ever spent.
Hissy noise *could* be an old fanbelt.

Thanks for your response!

The noise appears to reduce under gradual braking and stop completely if I break hard.

to test if its a warped disc could you just swap them round and see if the noise stay or goes to the other side?

either of the CV joints could be at fault or as mentioned before it could be the wheel bearings

cutting out could be out of tune carb, dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads or even coil breakdown. I'd recommend either the weather shield or an aldon ignitor kit the latter being more expensive and/or an overhaul of your ignition system

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll take your points to a trusted mechanic I know and see what we come up with. Any further ideas are welcomed!

Had a similar noise myself, used to sound like either a rubber squeak and sometimes a metal squel, thought it was the caliper catching the wheel (10" fiesta conversion) eventually found out what it was when the wheel almost fell of...........it was the bearing which had finally disintergrated. put new one on and hey presto no squeak.

>_< Yep all nice and tight. The wheel has been on and off a few times by various mechanics and it's remained the same. Maybe I'll try a new wheel bearing. That sounds rather cheap at least
