Has anyone ever done the Mongol Rally on this forum? Been looking at it and it must be such a great adventure!!! www.mongolrally.com if you don't know what i'm going on about.
That picture of the white Mini with the driver standing by the side of it with the dark blue/black sky behind is awesome!!
Anyway, has anyone done it and what mods would need to be done to a Mini to do it? Extra Fuel tank for definite!!?

In terms of essentials for equipping your car to tackle a 10,000 mile journey, all you really need is a couple of jerry cans for petrol to cover the longer of the gaps between petrol stations. Gaffa tape can fix all manner of ills. While mechanical knowledge can be useful, just think of all the extra fun you'll have by not knowing which end of a spanner to hold and getting into some frantic hand waving explaining that your car is broken to a passing Kazakh. The more that goes wrong the better - many of the best stories come from those that didn't quite make it.
It probably wont need that many mods, as you say extra fuel, tyres (roof rack would be helpful!), Spots ect..
Ive always wanted to do it, its just the untimate challenge!
Did you see jack ozbourne do the Mongol rally on Tv, it was brilliant!

in a mini. in 2006.
As their website says, all you really need to do is take a jerrycan to enable you to make it across the more sparsely populated areas. We raised the suspension and fitted sump guards & roofracks and some other stuff, but even that isn't absolutely essential - it's about adventure after all, no point making it too easy by turning your mini into a full on rally car!
Some photos and stuff on out "mini adventure" here: http://we-cant-climb.spaces.live.com (scroll down the photos/blog to find the rally bit).
and for anyone who's considering giving it a go, my advice is if you can get a place on it, do it!

Hey there.
Glad you enjoyed them, I didn't really take much in the way of video during the trip, however if you search youtube for the mongol rally you'll find enough to waste many an evening. There's also a neat little vid on the official website (www.mongolrally.com), or of course good old jack osbourne's programme.

That is a good point!!! I'm definitely going to try and go on it!!! I've heard it's stupidly hard though to get on it. Me and my mate that are thinking about doing it, have no mechanical experience except fitting a spare wheel!!! Should be a good adventure if we can get on it!

When in the year is this run? It seems like a great thing to do, and if I could do it before Uni that would be amazing! In 09 that is!
They both kick off in late july each year, and take around a month to complete. All your questions are answered (probably) here: http://mongolrally.t...venturists.com/
It does indeed seem very difficult to get a place on the mongol rally now, especially after the publicity from the Jack Osbourne documentary. Not sure how difficult the Africa rally is, but expect it to go the same way. However the organisers of these events have a few other adventures up their sleeves which may be easier to get places on, or may appeal more. Details here: http://www.theadvent...page=adventures
For a start, I'd certainly recommend the Rickshaw run as a fine way to waste a few weeks in the Subcontinent...
