I would get some engine oil on a rag or old toothbrush and clean it with that. It's just to remove any dirt that may be stuck in there.

It is best to get the proper stuff. It's a detergent spray to clean it, then run it under cold water and then a spray to protect it....not sure where to buy it, I got mine with the filter when I bought it.

As stated above, buy the K&N cleaning kit with the proper chemicals. Whatever you do... do NOT use compressed air to blow through the filter to clean it. They specifically warn against using compressed air.

If you don't coat it with something afterwards then the filter will be useless (at least the foam/mesh variety). Its not the material in these filters that catch the very very very small particle, its the spray they are coated with.

sorry to intrude on the thread, but how much better is the official K&N filters to the 3rd party copy filters which look identical?

You know... there was a reason I warned in my first post about not using compressed air on K&N filters.

You've invested money in an expensive, maintainable filter. Don't skimp on cleaning, buy the proper kit (no vacuums or compressed air, no dishwashing soap, etc).

The info you want is online. See K&N's web site:
http://www.knfilters.com/cleaning.htm

... and buy a proper cleaning kit unless you want to ruin a good filter.
