Hullo all,

Just a quickie >_<

I've recently changed my 850 to elctronic ignition (wow what a difference!) , my spark plugs are currently gapped according to the haynes manual. Should I widen the gaps of the sparkies a tad since there is a far healthier spark at the plugs? If so what size? Or should I not bother?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

This has been a popular topic recently paired with people who wanted to fit Sports Coils.

By all means experiment a little and open up the plug gap. Be conservative though as you don't want to make the car have driveability problems. I would say aim for about 0.030" (3/4mm) and take baby steps up from there.

What difference do you notice with electronic ignition? Presumably you changed the coil as well? I only ask because I am considering it.

Ok thank you, might give it a go >_<

The electronic ignition on my dizzy is designed for a standard coil. Therefore a sports coil would probably 'burn it out' or be too much for it. Acceleration is more responsive, more noticeable when dropping gears, she idles at a slow speed and only need the choke 1/4 way out to start within 3-4 mins it can be all the way in! Brilliant!

Mine are currently set at 0.025" (0.625 mm)

Use the search features for threads that detail what's different. Succinctly, the electronic ignition systems handle switching differently than the mechanical system that opens and closes the points. This allows an optimum on/off time for the coil and therefore... allows the plug gaps to be opened up... which equates to higher spark voltages and temperatures.

Hey Dklawson,

I think I have self adjusting plugs! My NY9's were all perfectly at 0.031 thou! Could try going larger from that, but maybe for another day, weathers got the best of me! :( Plugs were all in good condition I'm happy to say

Metty Turbos were specified at 40thou gap so you could take it a bit further yet.

A better spark equals faster burning so you can reduce the advance a bit.

did you have to reset the timing when you fitted the electronic ignition, or just a straight swap?

You can generally fit the electronic ignition (specifically Ignitor) components to the dizzy and get the car started. However, you should ALWAYS check the dynamic timing and reset it as necessary.

Remember, when you put the electronic ignition components in, there is no guarantee that the switchgear will be in exactly the same position as the points were.

Mine was simply a straight swap. I think the heat of engine caused the spark plugs to widen. Should I open them up more then? Theyre at 0.031 " now. So what should I step up to?

Clean the plugs and make small gap increases, I doubt you'll find the engine runs well above a 0.035" gap. Remember that the plug gap will widen with continued use so don't over do it. If 0.035" works, open them a bit more until the engine stops running well... then close the gap up at least 0.005" and remember to check them. If gas mileage suffers, close the gap up a bit more.

You have a PM! :-

Opening the gaps to 0.035 right now!
