I've got a 1982 Mini City 998. I've changed all of the ignition for new items, except the points/condenser etc. And it's got an intermitant missfire at mid-higher revs when under load.

I've opted to change to electronic ignition and the Aldon unit seems a popular choice. It's £90 from Mini Sport (or £65 from Aldon direct :( )

Does anybody know exactly which model I need? I think it's the Lucas 59D distributor that was fitted to my car originally, according to Mini Sport's catalogue. This requires Aldon model no. 4-LU144.

Can anyone confirm or correct me on this please? The car isn't close for me to check at the moment.

Thanks, Neil

Ironically, this is the second thread I've posted this to today.

Go to Mini Spares and key in the search word "ignitor" if the link below does not work:
http://www.minispare...s...vance&ty=fi

You said your dizzy is a 45D4. According to Mini Spares, this would be the LU143 kit, not the LU144 (which they list as for the 59 series dizzy).
Also note that the kit is less expensive at Mini Spares. It is my understanding that they are still offering a discount to members of this forum.

Check that the dizzy is not worn causing misfire?!

Just to further confuse the issue though, this is from Aldons own website

Lucas 43D4/45D4 - Fixed
4-LU143 £65.00
Aldon Ignitor unit to suit 43D4/45D4 4 cylinder Lucas distributors, fitted with fixed points. Negative earth only. Large View

Lucas 43D4/45D4 - Self wiping
4-LU144 £65.00

Depending on who's sites/catalogues you look at, you get conflicting advice. Thats why Im asking the question on here.

As Ironstoke points out, Aldon's website gives different info to the Mini Sport catalogue, which is why I am asking if anyone on here knows (a)Which dissy a 1982 Mini should have, and (b)Which ignition kit should fit it.

As Mini_Kel said, shaft wear and wobble could be causing your misfire. However, fitting the Ignitor will mask this and let you run a slightly worn dizzy so it's really up to you. You could carefully inspect and rebuild or replace your points dizzy or you could fit the Ignitor for a potentially more reliable ignition system that can live with the wear that's there.

I'm not trying to steal Aldon's reputation with you guys but they do not make the Ignitor. It is made by Pertronix. I've been on their web site tonight looking for clarification. I think Mini Spares has incorrect information. According to the Pertronix web site catalog, the LU-143 is listed for the Lucas 43D4 distributor... I've never seen one. They list the LU-144 kit for the 45D4 distributors and the LU-141 kit for 45 series distributors that came with factory electronic ignition (45DE4).

What ever one you need, I can certainly say this is probably the best electronic conversion unit on the market.

Just remembered, when I fitted my Aldon ignitor, I put a review on the BMF site..also looks like the've dropped in price

Might be some help to you

Just thought I'd put my experience down

After replacing pretty much all the ignition system it seemed my points had a mind of there own, you'd set them one week using a dwell meter, run like a dream then the points fairy would alter them and I'd get bad running..

So today nipped out brought an Aldon Ignitor set..

Should have been straight foreward asked for a set for a City 1984 they gave me part No LU143

Started the fitting and something wasn't quite right the new system didn't seem to fit flat on the dizzy plate.

So I looked on Aldon's website LU143 is upto 1980  LU144 is onwards..

Back to the shop dizzy in hand so we can be double sure and yes LU144 fits perfect..just for interest my dizzy is 41882a

Typical though there is a special note on the instructions which only applies to LU144 to make sure gap between module and the bit that rotates is 0.025" if not hole may need to be enlarged to allow adjustment..guess who had to enlarge his hole :genius:

Anyway once I'd got all the right parts I'd say 1/2 hr job tops including resetting the timing

£78 will see how it performs now

That was back in Dec 2006, and its run fine eversince
