do you definately want them near the airvents/heater? because if not, put some subs underneath the rear seats. best sound from there.

whilst it is an opinion Rob it is not what the OP asked for.
Also the best sound does not come from under the rear seats. Subs are omni-directional so it doesnt matter where a sub is to get the bass sound(just the right size enclosure for it)
Also not a great sound from speakers under the rear seat.

actually it depends what seats you use and how far they are away from the speaker.

is there only a small amount of space for positioning speakers under the rear seat anyway? not much leeway? or do you mean front seats?... and how far they are away from the speaker.

This topic is split from the other topic about having speakers in the old airvent holes.
done so there can be a discussion about the best positions for speakers without affecting the otehr post

IMO, and the opinion of other people who work with audio systems...
The BEST place for speakers is in front of you....
Basically the theory is, you don't go to a concert and turn your back on where the noise ( ok Music ) is coming from, nor do you arrange you home hifi behind you, so why should it be different in the car..
The next problem is where do you put them... well I can't answer that..

Sadly due to the air capacity under the rear seats, speakers in this position to not give the best sound. I would suggest any tweeters and smaller, higher frequency speakers to be positioned as directly as possible towards your ears.
For lower frequency producing speakers it's no way near as important.
