Hi, sorry if this question has been asked before but I have tried to search and not come up with anything concrete!!
Basically, I'm gonna upgrade the system in my '90 cooper but don't want to cut holes in him. Ages ago i bought an underseat speaker board from a show for another car.
I know that this postion is not ideal for 6x9s due to the amount of air available.
My question is, Is there any advantage to drilling holes in either the rear seat panel or rear bins to increase the air flow to the speakers?
Has anyone done this and is there any advanatge to it?
If there is, where woud be the best postition to drill the holes and what size?
Also if this is a silly idea, pls don't hesitate to tell me!!!
Thanks
Seamus

yes this is a silly question i have 6x9 's under my back seat and they work fine
you dont need to drill any holes just put them in.

I thought 6x9s worked better in an enclosure?

putting 6 x 9's under the rear seats should not be an issue as there is around 1 cubic foot under the seats if not slightly more. as for airflow it will depend on how sealed you are planning on making speaker baffle and how much juice you are gonna put through the speakers. many people have put these speakers under the rear seat before as it is conveinant and there is no modification to the vehicle needed. however it is not the best position for speakers which are to produce mid or high frequencies as the sound will just be hitting the back of your seats. subwoofers however are non-directional so to speak to their placement does not matter.
does you car have rear speakers in the parcel shelf at present?? if so why not just upgrade them??
if you are to use the 6 x 9s under the seat think about what type of sound you wish to acheive from them, if you seal the enclosure 100% they will have alot of mid bass,, however leave is slighty unsealed which i gather by stating you are not going to modify anything is the route you will take,, you will end up with less low midrange as they will effectively be running infinite baffle and not be in a properly sealed space. as for cutting holes in the rear bins it would be a total waste of time to be honest.
in my opinion if you could mount them in the the parcel shelf it would be much better,, the downside is cutting the shelf and making an mdf baffle for the to sit in, i have done this in mine and they sound fantastic as they use the boot as an enclosure, you would swear that there is a subwoofer of some sort connectted when listening to them as the frequency response is great..
hope thats a bit of help

Thanks for the comprehensive reply!!
I'm just being a tight arse, I've already got the board and a pair of kenwood 3 way 6x9s!!
I could easily fit them to the shelf, however i don't want to cut holes in the car at the mo as to do it properly I will have to remove the rear screen and can't be arsed to do so at the mo.
All I was looking to do was give the ice a quick tart up in prep for something more beefy later.
So my air flow theory was a bit out then?
I assumed it would work like a baffled sub box and the sound waves wouldn't canel each other out.
Thanks for your reply
