Hello! Am going to paint top and bottom dash rails.

I am buying a new top rail to do it off the car... I have decided to have it the same dark blue as the rest of the car, it is a metallic...

I was thinking....

Sand it down so its nice and rough

Use Plasticoat as a base

Two coats of the metallic

Coat or two of lacquer


IS this ok? Anything better I should consider for preping and priming?

I dont want it flaking off :saywhat:

Later cars must be a lot different from mine... my dash rails are welded in place and have to be painted in the car.

Regardless, I'm not sure I understand your paint sequence, nor am I sure it would work. Most spray paints like you're describing for the base coats are enamels. Lacquers, like you're describing for the top coat, use a different (more volatile) solvent systems. The lacquer will likely "lift" the base coats you're putting down. The rule when respraying is to put less volatile paint system over the more volatile ones so the base paint isn't affected. (i.e. Spray enamels on top of lacquers... not the other way around). Test the compatibility of your paints be practicing on a piece of scrap first.

Are you talking about the 'buffers' for want of a better word if so, not sure how they will take to ordinary paint, aslon sa the primary coat has goos adhesion to the vinyl the it should be ok, but I suspect they will be likely to chip and peel..

Try getting hold of some vinyl spray which is a sympathetic colouring to your interior. Halfords do a fairly decent range.
